Plan Ahead with these tips From The Blake’s Executive Director!

The Blake at Hamlin blends southern sensibilities with compassionate care for a senior living experience unlike any other. Coming soon to Horizon West, The Blake boasts an unparalleled resort-style Assisted Living and Memory Care facility! With over 20 years in her field, Executive Director- Angie Layfield- has her finger on the pulse of senior living and knows how to encompass the simplicity of what seniors want in their new home with the complexities of building new beginnings.

If your family has a loved one who could benefit from assisted living or memory care services, Angie is the expert you want on your side.

Opening the conversation about senior living arrangements before you need them is a key component to ensuring the transition into a new chapter is something fun to look forward to! Here are the top questions Angie gets asked by families who are exploring options.

When should I start planning for myself or a loved one?

Don’t wait! It is so important to identify local resources and options before there is an immediate need. When there is an immediate need, choices are fewer and emotions can run high. Senior living arrangements should be an open and ongoing conversation with all family members involved.

Talk to your loved ones. Find out what is most important to them as they move through the aging process. Get their input so that when a decision or need is imminent, you feel that you are making the decision with their input.

How should I discuss this topic with my loved one?

Approach senior living options as a new beginning or a fresh start! Focusing on options gives seniors more independence and a chance to be in control of their future. The loss of control or the perceived loss of control can be an uncomfortable barrier in the process. By proactively discussing it, you help your loved one maintain a sense of autonomy.

When is the right time to begin searching for a senior lifestyle community?

It is never too early to start evaluating senior living resources and options in your community.  Identifying the right solution for an individual or family can be quite cumbersome. It is not one size fits all. There are so many benefits to getting out and visiting communities and talking to members of those communities to get an idea of whether it might be a good fit.  The best advice I can give to seniors and families is to start early in the decision-making process. There are so many advantages to living in a community environment. I often hear residents and families say they wish they hadn’t waited so long to make the move!

What questions should I ask when I visit a community I am interested in?

All questions are good questions!

As providers, we understand that this is an overwhelming experience. Understanding all components of moving to a community creates realistic expectations. Some items to consider are admission and discharge policies specific to level of licensure—not all communities are created equal. Various assisted living communities can each hold varying levels of licenses, resulting in significant differences in the potential of a resident being able to stay in a community for the duration of their life.  Some communities can assist with oxygen, casts, braces, feeding tubes, and dependence on full care by team members while other communities cannot. Learning the differences and finding the right fit through a knowledgeable resource can positively impact the experience for your loved one and family as time goes forward.

No one moves into a community with the desire to move again, so make sure you ask the right questions and identify the solution that has the best potential of being long term.  The Blake at Hamlin holds a license as an assisted living facility. We also hold a specialty license called Extended Congregate Care that allows for residents to age in place in circumstances that may warrant a discharge from an assisted living facility without this specialty license.

What documents should be prepared ahead of time?

All seniors and their families are encouraged to have living wills, advanced directives and powers of attorney formalized.  Making wishes known is key to age in a way that is consistent with our own personal values and desires.

What can someone expect in the transition to a senior lifestyle community?

Seniors can expect a robust schedule of enriching activities, delicious meals and new friends.
This is combined with the peace of mind of knowing that they have access to supportive services to optimize their quality of life each and every day!

What kinds of things can be brought from home to make the individual more comfortable?

In senior living, we understand that our residents are often downsizing from larger family homes and in many cases, this is the biggest barrier seniors face as they consider moving.  It is human nature to want to carry our treasured memories with us when we begin a new chapter, and it is perfectly normal and expected. For many people, our belongings are a defining factor in our lives.

At The Blake, we challenge our seniors to think about the space within their home in which they actually “live”. Often, they realize it is much smaller than the larger home and in fact it is just getting in the way of them living their best life.  We want our residents to bring items from home that are meaningful to them and create a balance between the home they are leaving and the new home they are creating.  They can decorate their new homes with furniture, new and old, hang pictures, paintings and family photographs on their walls and really just make it their own.  Although, be prepared to not spend as much time as you might think in your apartment because between new friends, events and outings, you’ll stay busier and more engaged than you ever thought was possible.
