Distractions Silenced! New OCPS Cell Phones Policy in Place This School Year

Leah Emmanouilidis • August 16, 2023

Cell Phones (and Watches and Earbuds) Must Be Put Away in School

In today’s day and age, distractions abound with technology all around us! OCPS is keeping its focus on learning and prioritizing school as a place for distraction-free education.

As such, OCPS policy now requires that wireless communications devices be silenced and put away (in a backpack or purse) during the school day while on campus, including lunchtime and transitioning between classes. The policy says wireless communication devices include, but are not limited to, cell phones and/or auxiliary/ancillary devices such as watches and ear buds and strives to create a learning environment that's free from unnecessary digital distractions and enhances school security.

There will be exceptions for some students with disabilities and medical needs, and if a teacher allows phones for educational purposes.

Expected outcomes, in addition to the elimination of distractions, are reduction in cyber-bullying and minimizing the inappropriate use of social media — both of which have been problematic on OCPS campuses county-wide. Moreover, it encourages students to engage more actively with their peers and the educational process face-to-face and all these changes can contribute to a healthier and more focused educational experience for our students.

After the transition period, which runs until September 4, 2023, students will receive a discipline referral for violations of the new policy.

The following actions will be taken if a student violates OCPS’ cell phone policy:

  • Confiscation (Item returned at the end of the day)
  • Detention
  • Positive Alternative to School
  • Suspension (PASS)
  • Out-of-School Suspension (OSS)

Students are permitted to have a cellphone on school property, at after-school activities and on school buses.

By adopting these measures, OCPS is taking a proactive step toward ensuring students have the opportunity to make the most of their education while enjoying a safer and more inclusive school environment.

OCPS Superintendent Maria Vazquez discussed the new cell phone policy in a recent Mondays with Maria video.

Details on the cell phone and all other policies are available in the OCPS Code of Conduct 2023-2024.
