Bringing Wellness, Connection and Leadership To Our Youth

When we said all the things were coming to Horizon West, we meant it! The newest addition to our community will be brought to you by the YMCA of Central Florida.

Programs for kids ages 3-17 will kick off this fall, promoting wellness, connection and leadership among our young people.

What Programs Will Be Offered?

The YMCA offers a variety of ways to get and stay healthy at their nearby Roper location. With the exponential growth Horizon West is experiencing the community has been calling loudly for a YMCA presence in the area. The response?

YMCA leaders are beginning the process of integrating into the HW community by launching a 5 season sports program featuring flag football, basketball and volleyball. The volleyball and basketball programs will be hosted at Windermere High School for the 2019-2020 season and flag football will take place at Deputy Scott Pine Park. Sports will vary from season to season- both indoor and outdoor- and will remain consistent with the YMCA of Central Florida Sports Calendar. Seasons will consist of 8 games and 1 practice per week. Registration for Fall Sports begins on September 9th while Winter Sports registration will open on November 26th. Dates for Spring and Summer leagues will be announced in the coming months.

Will There Be A YMCA Location In Horizon West?

We had the opportunity to chat with Program Director, Chris Demetriou, about upcoming plans. As a Horizon West resident, parent and community leader Chris is thrilled that programming is making its way to our doorsteps. "The YMCA of Central Florida is continuously exploring new opportunities to best serve the changing needs of our growing community with the help and support of community partners, advocates and donors," he says.

Demetriou expanded on the plans for future programming, saying "Youth sports is our starting point to expanding our footprint in Horizon West. We will continue to evaluate additional programming as interest grows."
