Lost or Found Pets
You've seen the flyers at the park and the posts in your neighborhood group on Facebook, what do you do when your pet goes missing or you spot a pet wandering alone on the sidewalk? We consulted area experts, Chain of Lakes Animal Clinic and Orange County Animal Services for tips on how to best handle these situations.
Dr. Chesanek of Chain of Lakes Animal Clinic encourages you to secure the pet to keep it safe and bring it to the closest local vet to be scanned for a microship - ONLY if the pet is approachable and friendly. If the pet is nervous or skiddish, Orange County Animal Services will come out and help secure the pet. If you and your family would like to help find the owner, you are allowed to provide a home for the pet for up to 30 days as long as you are actively searching for the owner and a report has been filed with the county. If you are not able to provide care for the lost pet, Orange County Animal Services will shelter the pet in a humane facility. Local experts also strongly encourage you to utilize social media community groups and apps with photos and descriptions of the pet with a way to contact you if the family recognizes their pet.
In order for your information to be safe, please never include your home address on an online posting!
If you have LOST a pet, we encourage you to utilize tools on social media such as neighborhood and community groups as well as apps like Nextdoor. Post a recent picture of your pet with information on how to contact you. Again, experts advise you not to list your home address or pictures with your home address in it for safety reasons.
