Nonprofit Invites Horizon West Residents to Serve Neighbors Experiencing Homelessness with Dignity, Compassion and Connection

In a fast-growing community like Horizon West, it can be easy to overlook neighbors who are struggling just beyond view.
But for Matthew's Hope Ministries, serving the homeless is about far more than meeting immediate needs. It’s about restoring dignity, creating stability, and helping people feel seen, safe, and valued.
Based in Winter Garden, Matthew’s Hope is a nonprofit ministry dedicated to helping men, women, and children experiencing homelessness throughout Central Florida.
Through outreach services, meal drives, clothing assistance, hygiene care, job resources, medical support, and community partnerships, the organization works to provide a hand up, not just a handout.
And at the heart of that mission are volunteers.
For Horizon West residents looking to live what Horizon West Magazine often celebrates as the Good Stuff lifestyle, a life rooted in connection, purpose, and meaningful community involvement, Matthew’s Hope offers a powerful opportunity to make a tangible difference close to home.

Volunteer Opportunities Beyond the Expected
On outreach days, volunteers help create an environment where guests are welcomed with compassion and respect.
Beyond receiving resources, many guests experience something even more impactful: a sense of encouragement during difficult seasons of life, with Matthew’s Hope volunteer opportunities extending far beyond what many people might expect.
“We actually have many unique volunteer opportunities that people might not know about,” Matthew's Hope Orange County director, Shannon Diaz shares.
“For example, if anyone has a current hairstylist or barber license, they can absolutely volunteer their time to give our guests haircuts. We’ve even had volunteers come in to do nails for our guests, which is always a wonderful blessing.”
In addition to those unique offerings, people can volunteer in the Matthew’s Hope woodshop or at the organization's Winter Garden thrift boutique, Matthew's Hope Chest.
From serving meals and organizing donations to offering professional skills or simply spending time with guests, volunteers play a direct role in creating an atmosphere of hope and dignity.
Adults 18 and older are welcome to volunteer independently, while younger volunteers can participate alongside a parent or guardian, making it a meaningful opportunity for families looking to serve together.
A Meaningful Way to Give Back
For many volunteers, the experience becomes transformative in its own right.
In a world increasingly dominated by busy schedules and digital distractions, giving back offers something deeply grounding: purpose.
The act of serving others often creates stronger community ties, greater gratitude, and a renewed perspective on what truly matters.
That spirit of compassion and connection is exactly what organizations like Matthew’s Hope help cultivate for Horizon Westers and their surrounding community.
Horizon West residents interested in getting involved can learn more and complete a volunteer form through the Matthew’s Hope Orange County outreach page.
Whether offering a few hours a month or becoming a regular part of the ministry’s outreach efforts, every volunteer helps create something invaluable: hope, community and the reminder that no one should walk through hardship alone.
