With the 2020-2021 school year still in flux for what options might be available to Orange County families, now is the time to prepare with as much information as possible so you’re ahead of the curve when it’s time to make a decision!

Below is all the info you need to understand the different options for virtual learning, as well as where to find the latest info on in-person options when they are announced. No matter what you choose, we are all in this together and we wish you a successful school year!

Orange County Public Schools conducted a survey with over 108,000 responses from residents to gain insight into what families would like to see in the upcoming school year. Responses from residents as well as teachers and students were included in the survey results

As of right now, official options have not been announced, but you can stay tuned in by bookmarking the Orange County Public Schools Page. We also encourage you to become familiar with the Reopening Florida Schools CARES Act from the Florida Department of Education. This document debriefs guidelines for reopening giving you a better understanding of the processes in place to ensure safety during education for all Orange County Students.

Mrs. Brandi Gurley, Principal of Orange County Virtual School invites you to the home of the Chargers!

Established in 2010, Orange County Virtual School has served students and their families  throughout Central Florida. Their virtual education opportunity offers students a flexible, innovative and customized learning model that supports their unique, individual needs  while satisfying state requirements for completion. Whether enrolled as a full-time or part-time student, each may participate in clubs and activities offered through OCVS including our Science, Art, Music and Yearbook clubs  or any extracurricular activities offered through your traditional zoned school.

As Florida’s largest district virtual school serving more than 20,000 students, they are committed to providing an atmosphere of learning where students in all grade levels can achieve their educational goals.

Since opening, OCVS has experienced rapid growth. Recognized as the 2019 Franchise of the Year by the Florida Virtual School system, they are ranked first among District Virtual Instruction programs in the State and voted Best High School for National Rankings for the past three years.

As you begin preparing for the 2020-21 school year, they invite you to attend one of the upcoming information sessions to learn more about  offerings and determine if virtual school is the right choice for your child. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to visit the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact a member of the OCVS staff.

FLVS Full Time works much like a traditional public school, with the exception that students work from the comfort of their own home!

Like in a traditional physical school, classes start in August and end in May. Students have a load of six courses at one time – no more, no less. Teachers are available from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. weekdays and the student’s day is more structured than in the FLVS Flex program with school-specific announcements and student activities.

Students are required to work in each course each week to stay on track with the traditional course schedule. FLVS Full Time also offers regular, honors, Advanced Placement, and Dual Enrollment courses with Polk State College. Because FLVS Full Time is a public school and serves as the student’s school of record, students are required to participate in all state standardized testing.

The Full-Time program coordinates testing and manages records for their students.  FLVS Full Time students are public school students and therefore can earn a state-issued high school diploma. Students are also able to participate in a traditional graduation ceremony at the end of their senior year once all their graduation requirements have been met.

FLVS Flex offers year-round rolling enrollment so students can start and finish a course at any time. Public, private, and home education students can utilize FLVS Flex courses. Students who choose not to attend a physical public or private school can register as home education students in their county of residence. A variety of learners can benefit from a flexible schedule, including those with medical needs, athletes, students who need to catch up, and those who want to get ahead.

With FLVS Flex, students can focus on fewer courses, but work at an accelerated pace to finish in less time. They can tailor a schedule that works for them! FLVS Flex teachers are available from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Home Education Students who take FLVS Flex courses are not required to participate in state standardized tests. However, if they plan to register in a Florida public school at any point in the future, they are welcome and encouraged to participate by contacting their local Home Education Office.

Homeschool students with FLVS Flex do not earn a traditional high school diploma; instead home education parents graduate their students by completing the Home School Affidavit.

FLVS Flex offers regular, honors, and Advanced Placement courses and home education students are welcome to dual enroll at their local state college/university if admitted by those programs!

Choosing what's right for your family means being educated about ALL your options! Be sure to explore state and county options and prepare ahead of time for unforeseen circumstances so that your child has a smooth transition into the new school year.
